Here's the catch: indoor light is far dimmer than it looks. A room that feels bright to you may read as deep shade to a plant.Β

How Much Light Indoor Plants Need

Two variables get conflated in this question, and separating them clears up most of the confusion. Duration is how many hours of light per day a plant receives. Intensity is how bright that light is at the leaf.

A pothos under 14 hours of dim hallway light can still struggle, while the same plant near an east-facing window may thrive on less. Photosynthesis, the process where chlorophyll converts light into energy, depends on the total light delivered, and intensity does most of the delivering.

So the honest answer runs in two parts. Give most houseplants 8 to 16 hours of light per day, matched to their type. Then make sure the light during those hours is bright enough to count. The rest of this guide shows you how to check.

Light Intensity, Measured in Foot-Candles

Foot-candles are the standard US unit for light intensity. One foot-candle is roughly the brightness of a single candle one foot away. Lux is the metric equivalent, at about 10.76 lux per foot-candle.

Some real-world anchors help these numbers mean something:

  • Direct summer sun outdoors peaks around 10,000 foot-candles

  • A bright, unobstructed windowsill lands closer to 500 to 1,000 foot-candles

  • An interior wall across the room may only get 50 to 100 foot-candles

That last number explains a lot of struggling plants. Our eyes are terrible judges of light intensity because they auto-adjust. A reading nook that looks perfectly bright may be 20 times dimmer than the window ten feet away.

You may also run into PPFD, short for Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density. It measures the light plants can use for photosynthesis, and it's the metric serious grow-light shoppers compare. For everyday houseplant decisions, foot-candles are plenty. PPFD becomes useful when you're dialing in supplemental lighting for demanding plants.

How to Measure the Light You Have

You don't need equipment to get a useful read. Three methods cover it, ordered cheapest to most precise.

1. The shadow test

On a sunny day, hold your hand a foot above the spot where the plant sits. A crisp, sharp-edged shadow means bright light. A soft, fuzzy shadow means medium light. A faint shadow, or none, means low light.

2. A phone light-meter app

This is the step up when you want a number instead of a vibe. Apps measure lux rather than PAR (the plant-usable portion of light), and readings shift with the angle you hold the phone, so treat the result as a solid estimate.

3. A dedicated meter

Reading Light by Window Direction and Distance

Window direction is the fastest shortcut to estimating light without measuring. In the Northern Hemisphere:

  • South-facing windows deliver the brightest, longest light, including direct sun for much of the day

  • East- and west-facing windows give moderate light; east brings gentle morning light, while west brings hotter afternoon sun

  • North-facing windows receive the lowest light, with no direct sun

Southern Hemisphere readers, flip that: north-facing windows are your bright ones.

Distance matters as much as direction. Light intensity drops off sharply as you move away from the glass, a physics rule called the inverse-square law. In plain terms, a plant three feet from a window can receive a fraction of the light a plant on the sill gets.Β

Several things shave down usable light further. Sheer curtains soften direct sun into bright indirect light, which many tropical plants prefer, but they also cut total intensity. Window screens, exterior trees or buildings, tinted glass, and plain old dirty windows all take a bite.

Season matters too. Winter brings shorter days and a lower sun angle, so a spot that supported a plant in July may quietly starve it by January. Matching Plants to Their Light Needs

Once you know what light you have, match plants to it rather than forcing the reverse. Three broad tiers cover most houseplants.

Low-Light Plants

Snake plant, pothos, ZZ plant, and cast-iron plant tolerate 50 to 150 foot-candles, roughly the range of a north-facing window or a spot well back from brighter glass. Tolerate is the operative word. These plants survive low light; they grow faster and fuller with more.

And low light doesn't mean no light. A truly dark corner, below about 50 foot-candles, will eventually wear down even a ZZ plant.

Medium and Bright-Indirect Plants

Monstera, philodendron, peace lily, and most calatheas want 150 to 500 foot-candles. That translates to a spot near an unobstructed east or west window, or a few feet back from a south window.Β 

Bright indirect light, the phrase on every care tag, describes exactly this: strong light that doesn't hit the leaves as direct sun. A sheer curtain over a sunny window creates it reliably.

High-Light Plants

Succulents, cacti, citrus, fiddle-leaf figs, and most herbs and edibles need 500 or more foot-candles, and many want direct sun for part of the day. A south-facing sill is the natural home here.

Anything that flowers or fruits demands more light than a foliage plant of the same size, because blooms and fruit are expensive to produce.

Signs of Too Little or Too Much Light

Your plants report their light situation constantly. You just have to read the symptoms.

Too little light shows up as leggy, stretched growth with long gaps between leaves. New leaves come in small and pale. The whole plant leans toward the window. Growth slows, lower leaves drop, and variegated leaves fade toward solid green as the plant maximizes its chlorophyll.

Too much light looks harsher: scorched or bleached patches on the leaves, crispy brown edges, and washed-out, faded color. A plant that wilts in the afternoon despite moist soil is often getting cooked, not underwatered.

Diagnose by the pattern rather than a single symptom. Yellowing leaves, for instance, can signal overwatering, underwatering, or a light problem. Cross-check your watering routine and the soil before you relocate a plant, so you're fixing the actual cause.

When and How to Use Grow Lights

Sometimes natural light just isn't there to work with. North-facing rooms, windowless bathrooms and offices, deep winter, and high-light plants in average homes all hit the same wall. That's when a grow light stops being optional gear and starts being the difference between surviving and thriving.

Four specs tell you most of what you need to know when comparing options.

Make seasonal rotation a habit. When days shorten in fall, move plants from their summer spots to the brightest real estate in the house. Many houseplants that decline in winter aren't sick. They're on summer placement during winter light.

Measure First, Then Match

The plants that struggle indoors usually aren't hard plants. They're mismatched plants, parked in light their owners never measured. Run the shadow test this week, sort your spots into low, medium, and bright, and check them against what each plant wants.
