Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to grow?

Seeds take 7-14 days to sprout, and will be ready to start harvesting in 2 months. Continuous harvesting will encourage a bushy plant and greater yield.

How long will it last?

Herbs and flowers will continue to grow with sufficient nutrients and light.

How much sun will it need?

Garden Jars require at least 6 hours of direct light daily, and should be put in an unobstructed window that faces south, west or east (southwest is the best option). During winter months—or if you don’t have an unobstructed window—you can supplement with a grow light.

Can I put it outside?

Garden Jars are designed for indoor use, but can be put outside. Be mindful that the planter does not have a drain hole, and if the reservoir floods it may drown the roots. Bring inside if temps dip below 55⁰ or above 80⁰.

How is it reusable?

The stainless steel net pot and recycled glass grow medium can both be reused—simply rinse with hot water. Add new seeds and use soil or coco pith to help seeds germinate. Use a water soluble fertilizer and follow its instructions.

How do passive hydroponics work?

Passive hydroponics is a method of growing plants without soil. A combination of an inert porous growing medium and a wick transports water and nutrients to the plant roots via capillary action. The nutrient solution (water and fertilizer) are held in a reservoir and taken up as needed, providing the perfect balance of water to oxygen.

Basil

Temperature: 69-72 degrees Fahrenheit

Light: At least 4 hours of direct sunlight a day

Moisture: Average; likes damp, but not wet conditions

Germination Time: 5-8 days

Planting Depth: ½” below soil

Won’t sprout? Make sure your plant is getting enough sunshine.

To encourage more full yields, prune often, and prune down to the lowest nodes.

Cilantro

Temperature: 65+ Degrees

Light: Mid to full sun

Moisture: Mid-level moisture, damp misting recommended

Germination Time: 1-2 weeks

Planting Depth: Barely cover with soil

Won’t sprout? Make sure theplanter surface hasn’t dried completely. Mist regularly to prevent drying.

Lavender

Temperature: 73+ degrees Farenheit

Light: Maximum amount of sun available

Moisture: Prefers very dry grow medium conditions

Germination Time: 3 weeks to 1 month

Planting Depth: Barely cover with soil

Won’t sprout? Try lowering your water levels and frequency. Avoid top-down watering.

To encourage more full yields,prune regularly.

Mint

Temperature: 74+ Degrees

Light: High light exposure, south facing windows highly recommended

Moisture: Dry

Germination Time: 8- 12 days

Planting Depth: Do not bury under soil

Try greenhousing. Keep in a sunny spot and cover the surface with plastic wrap. Let condensation form, and check in 3-5 days for results.

Parsley

Temperature: 70 degrees Fahrenheit

Light: South-facing windows with full sun

Moisture: Middle to high moisture, mist regularly

Germination Time: 3 to 4 weeks

Planting Depth: Barely cover with soil

Won’t sprout? Give them time! Parsley can be avery slow grower.

Rosemary

Temperature: 71+ degrees Fahrenheit

Light: Long term, direct sun exposure

Moisture: Dry to middle dry

Germination Time: 2-3 weeks

Planting Depth: Barely cover with soil

Won’t sprout? Mist every 2-3 days and to a sunnier location. Rosemary relies heavily on sunlight to start.
