Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to grow?

Herb seeds take 7-14 days to sprout, and will be ready to start harvesting in 2+ months. Continuous harvesting will encourage a bushy plant and greater yield.

How long will it last?

Plants will continue to grow with sufficient nutrients and light; however, after 3-6 months it may develop a woody stem and the leaves will become a bit bitter.

How much sun will it need?

Herbs require at least 6 hours of direct light daily, and should be put in an unobstructed window that faces south, west or east (southwest is the best option). During winter months—or if you don’t have an unobstructed window—you can supplement with a grow light.

Can I put it outside?

Garden Jars are designed for indoor use, but can be put outside. Be mindful that the planter does not have a drain hole, and if the reservoir floods it may drown the roots. Bring your Garden Jar inside if temps dip below 55⁰ or above 80⁰.

How is it reusable?

The net pot and rgrow medium can both be reused—simply rinse with hot water. Add new seeds and use a water soluble fertilizer and follow its instructions.

Basil

Temperature: 69-72 degrees Fahrenheit

Light: At least 4 hours of direct sunlight a day

Moisture: Average; likes damp, but not wet conditions

Germination Time: 5-8 days

Planting Depth: ½” below soil

Won’t sprout? Make sure your plant is getting enough sunshine.

To encourage more full yields, prune often, and prune down to the lowest nodes.

Rosemary

Temperature: 71+ degrees Fahrenheit

Light: Long term, direct sun exposure

Moisture: Dry to middle dry

Germination Time: 2-3 weeks

Planting Depth: Barely cover with soil

Won’t sprout? Mist every 2-3 days and to a sunnier location. Rosemary relies heavily on sunlight to start.

Thyme

Temperature: 60+ Degrees Fahrenheit

Light: Full Sun

Moisture: Minimal. A true set and forget seed type.

Germination Time: 14-28 Days

Planting Depth: 1/8” for hydroponic kits, ¼” for non-hydroponic growing

Won’t sprout? Thyme starts from an especially small seed, one reason why we package so many per kit! Tiny seeds need a bit more time to get strong enough to be seen with the naked eye, let alone spring up strong and green. Give them a bit of extra time for heaps of Thyme to spare!

To encourage more full yields, Thyme should be pruned and used. Freeze trimmings for use when out of season!

The seeds in my kit sprouted easily and the plant is healthy and easy to take care of. It smells wonderful and I can snip fresh leaves whenever I need them or dry the leaves for future use and, bonus, it's pretty to look at!
